Navajo Nation supports Norton
JANUARY 30, 2001

Gale Norton gained support on Monday from the largest tribe in the nation when Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ) introduced into the Congressional record a letter written by Navajo Nation President Kelsey Begaye supporting her nomination for Secretary of Interior.

The tribe cited Norton's work with Colorado Ute Tribes on the Animas-LaPlata water projects as evidence of her commitment to Indian issues. The project directly addresses the water rights of two Ute tribes but also provides benefits to the Navajo Nation.

An advocate of judicial restraint, Norton supported the project because it would prevent the tribes from filing lawsuits to protect their water rights.
