MAY 24, 2001 In an interview with the Denver Rocky Mountain News, Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) on Wednesday said the Bush administration hasn't been "real sensitive" to the needs of senators like him. Specifically, Campbell points out Bush's pledge to fund tribal schools with nearly $1 billion. At a campaign stop in New Mexico, Bush promised Pueblo and other tribal leaders to use the money to fix crumbling schools. But Campbell says the Bush budget has less than a tenth of that amount for construction. About $129 million has been requested for construction in the Bureau of Indian Affairs' fiscal year 2002 budget. After the campaign stop, New Mexico's 19 Pueblos endorsed Al Gore for President.
