A spokesperson for New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson on Wednesday said activist Russell Means' felony conviction won't necessarily hinder his run to replace the outgoing Republican leader.

Diane Kinderwater said Johnson can issue Means a certificate allowing him to hold public office. That would prevent Means from asking old foe Governor Bill "Indian Killer" Janklow to pardon him for his South Dakota crime.

Yet Means says he isn't seeking Johnson's help. He believes the New Mexico law forbidding felons from holding public office is unconstutional and his Libertarian party will go to court if necessary.

Means would be running in 2002. Johnson cannot run again due to term limits.
