Bush plans regular Spanish address
MAY 7, 2001

President Bush on Saturday gave the first ever White House address in Spanish and plans to continue the practice weekly.

The address came on Cinco de Mayo, a Mexican holiday which commemorates an 1862 battle in which Mexican and Zapotec forces defeated the French army as part of the war to rid the country of France. A Mexican mariachi band and Hispanic celebrities celebrated the day with Bush.

Bush on Sunday opened the White House to Little Leaguers and Boston Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra. The White House lawn was the site of a T-ball game.
