THURSDAY, JANUARY 17, 2002

The Environmental Protection Agency is refusing to cooperate with its independent watchdog because he has sued the agency.

Ombudsman Robert Martin is seeking information about a toxic gas probe for the Shattuck Superfund site in Colorado. But the EPA won't release anything, citing Martin's lawsuit opposing an attempt to realign his office under the Inspector General.

A federal judge has temporarily prohibited the move.
