FRIDAY, JANUARY 25, 2002

A protest on Thursday by Native Americans at the Statehouse in Indiana convinced a state lawmaker to amend a bill to create a commission of Indian affairs.

The bill originally was designed to establish a Hispanic commission to advise the General Assembly. But Indian demonstrators complained that they were being left out.

State Rep. William Crawford, a Democrat from Indianapolis, agreed to amend the legislation.
