House vote set on campaign finance

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2002

It's do or die on the House floor today, when a much anticipated vote over the Shays - Meehan campaign finance reform bill will occur.

Debate on the measure began last night with supporters agreeing to wait until 2003 for it to take effect. Soft money donations, which the bill bans, would be allowed until then.

House GOP leaders are opposed to the bill and are seeking to offer an alternative to limit but not ban the unregulated donations. They also are seeking to offer amendments which would force those would normally support the bill to vote against it, or boggle it down so much that it won't ever clear a joint House-Senate conference committee.
