Tribes from the Pacific Northwest gave Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb a not so sweet Valentine's Day gift on Thursday, criticizing a proposal to strip the Bureau of Indian Affairs of its trust responsibilities.

The Portland, Oregon, meeting was the eighth, and last scheduled, meeting on the Bureau of Indian Trust Assets Management (BITAM). Future meetings are planned in Billings, Montana; Window Rock, Arizona; and Phoenix, Arizona; but dates have not be set.

Comments on BITAM are due by February 28, but McCaleb said an extension is almost guaranteed.
