Dispute grows over tribal donations

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2002 A California state lawmaker is denying claims made in a report that he helped organize tribal opposition to a Los Angeles mayoral candidate last year. Assemblyman Tony Cardenas, a Democrat, says he didn't ask tribes to spend money on ads attacking the opponent to Mayor James K. Hahn. Hahn defeated Antonio Villaraigosa last summer. But a report by the Los Angeles County district attorney's office suggests Cardenas had a role. The office is forwarding the report to the city ethics commission.
