Senate rejects judicial pick

FRIDAY, MARCH 15, 2002

President Bush expressed deep disappointment on Thursday after the Senate Judiciary Committee rejected his pick to a federal appeals court.

In a 10-9 vote split along party lines, the committee refused to endorse Charles Pickering. The decision came after four hours of debate.

The nomination could be revived in the full Senate but Republicans would need 60 votes to do so, which is unlikely. Pickering is currently a federal judge in Mississippi.
