A hotel chain which entered into a consent agreement in a discrimination case has withdrawn its request for early termination.

Both the Adams Mark hotel and the Bush administration received negative press after news of the request and its consideration by a senior Department of Justice official was reported by The Washington Post. The president and chief executive of the hotel's parent company said yesterday he didn't want to "disrespect" Attorney General John Ashcroft, a personal friend, any further.

The Clinton administration sued the chain after African-American guests were required to wear bright orange wristbands while attending a college reunion. The company agreed to a consent decree but admitted no wrongdoing.
