Vote delayed on embattled judge

FRIDAY, MARCH 8, 2002

The Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday delayed by one week a vote on a controversial nominee to a federal appeals court.

But not before Republicans blasted Democrats for the way the confirmation of Charles Pickering has been handled. "Lynching" was used at least once.

Pickering is currently a federal judge in Mississippi. President Bush has nominated him to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, which hears cases affecting tribes in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi.
