Battle over Congressional seat in Conn.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 24, 2002

Author Jeff Benedict has forced a delegate primary in a Connecticut town in order to stay in a hotly contested race in the state's 2nd Congressional district.

Benedict needs enough delegate votes in order to force a statewide Democrat primary. Otherwise, frontrunner Joe Courtney, a former state representative, has enough delegates to secure the party nomination.

Rep. Rob Simmons is the Republican incumbent. He has made tribal recognition one of his top concerns but Benedict says it is not enough.

Benedict wants to terminate the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation.
