Norton tells Slonaker to report to Griles

THURSDAY, MAY 2, 2002

Special Trustee Tom Slonaker has been told to report to Deputy Secretary J. Steven Griles on trust reform matters.

Slonaker is a presidential appointee who would otherwise be on the same level as a deputy. But in a memo written in response to Slonaker's request for more trust reform authority, Norton said Griles is in charge.

Rejecting the request, Norton also criticized Slonaker's performance. The dispute is expected to be discussed in a forthcoming report by court monitor Joseph S. Kieffer III.
