Notah Begay III, the 27-year-old Isleta Pueblo / Navajo golfer from New Mexico, is back on the green again this week, playing one of the world's most beautiful courses in one of the most anticipated golf tournaments this year.

After winning two consecutive PGA tournaments in the United States and placing fourth in last week's Loch Lomond International, Begay opened the British Open in St. Andrews, Scotland, with some strong playing. He led during the early round of play on Thursday and ended up tied for fourth at the end of the first round.

His first round score was 69 or 3-under-par. He shared the distinction with a crowd of 14 others.

The British Open marks the meeting of Begay and former Stanford University teammate Tiger Woods. Begay and Woods have also been longtime rivals.

Woods finished the first round with a score of 67 or 5-under-par. Ernie Els is in the lead, however, with a score of 66 or 6-under-par.
