Alaska Native columnist fired

An Alaska Native who wrote paid columns for The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner has been fired by the paper.

Gary Moore often wrote articles critical of Alaska Native leadership, corporations and federal policy affecting Alaska Natives. Some of his recent controversy-drawing columns included Alaska Native public housing, the Tanana Chiefs Conference he unsuccessfully sought to run and the justice system.

The paper says his release, and that of Dan O'Neil, another critical writer, was not related to their topics of interest. But Moore, in a letter to the paper, suggests that "heads of government agencies or other publicly-funded businesses whose decisions were scrutinized in my columns or others" played a role in his firing.

The paper is replacing Moore and O'Neil with a "community voices" section of the paper. It debuted yesterday.
