MONDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2001

The Oneida Nation of New York held its second annual hate crimes forum on Friday.

In a speech, tribal representative Ray Halbritter focused on prejudice directed towards the tribe. He blamed a particular group for "bolstering" hate which he later said was an anti-treaty rights group called Upstate Citizens for Equality.

UCE president Scott Peterman said his group doesn't preach hate. But when asked about a poster which presents a threatening message to Halbritter, Peterman said it was OK.
