Mother calls son's death a hate crime

THURSDAY, JULY 19, 2001 The mother of a 16-year-old Navajo boy who was found beaten to death last month in Colorado said the incident was a hate crime. Pauline Mitchell said her son, Fred Jr., was killed because of his gender identity. Fred has been described alternately as gay or transgendered. Shaun Murphy, an 18-year-old from New Mexico, has been implicated in the death. Get the Story:
