JULY 6, 2000

A poll conducted by The Mellman Group for Democratic Senate candidate Maria Cantwell shows Cantwell catching up to Senator Slade Gorton in the race for the Washington State Congressional seat.

In a one-on-one matchup poll, Gorton is in the lead with 43 percent and Cantwell second with 37 percent. 600 likely voters responded to the survey.

Gorton has been targetted by Cantwell and the American Medical Association recently. Many in Indian Country oppose Gorton for his anti-tribal soveriegnty views. Chairman Billy Cypress of the Miccosukee Tribe of Florida counts him as a friend of their tribe.
