Editorial: Fix the trust problem already

FRIDAY, JANUARY 11, 2002

In an editorial, The Bismarck Tribune calls on the Department of Interior to fix its long-standing computer problems that led to an Internet shutdown, now in its second month.

"At this stage in the development of the issue of Indian Trust Fund management, it's unconscionable that the computerized accounting system was unprotected," writes the paper. "The security issue at Interior appears to be a part of an embarrassing pattern."

"It's time for the Department of Interior to get it right."

The paper says the department should be able to isolate the Indian trust systems electronically and restart web sites that have been shut down since December 5. To do that, the department must certify to a federal court that a particular system has no access to individual Indian trust data.
