MONDAY, JANUARY 21, 2002

The Alaska Native Heritage Center on Sunday held a celebration in honor Martin Luther King Jr., which featured a speech by Anchorage police chief Walt Monegan.

Monegan is the city's first police chief of Native heritage. Monegan is Yup'ik, Tlingit, English and Irish.

Monegan spoke about accepting diversity and referenced the problems his city has faced. Rapes and murders of Native women have gone unsolved and last year, three white youth videotaped themselves targeting Natives with a paintball gun.
