MacDonald recalls year of freedom

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 23, 2002 Former Navajo Nation leader Peter MacDonald on Monday said it was a "miracle" that he was released from prison a year ago. At a celebration held in his honor in Farmington, New Mexico, MacDonald is quoted by the Associated Press as saying: "I never lost hope, I never lost faith. You didn't lose faith, you didn't lose hope, either." MacDonald was convicted in February 1993 on federal conspiracy charges for an incident, at which he was not present, that left two dead. He was also convicted on racketeering and fraud charges. On January 20, 2001, his 14-year prison sentence was commuted by President Clinton. Get the Story:
