Yellow Bird: 'Fighting Sioux' debate

"I'm a transplant to the Grand Forks area, and I feel it is my home, but there are times when I am not so proud of some things in the community. I am feeling frustrated by recent events that seemed racially motivated. Yet, after talking with UND administrators, I see, perhaps, a rainbow that I missed in the cloud of disillusionment that hung over my head.

Here are some of the events that have frustrated me:

The professors at the law school unanimously passed a resolution resolving to encourage UND administration to cease the use of the "Fighting Sioux" nickname because they felt it was creating a discriminatory environment. Some law students put together a petition saying they were left out of the vote, and they support the use of the name. That is their right, of course, but it is disconcerting that law students would take a stand against something that most area tribal governments (perhaps future clients) have said is offensive.

Move the clock back a few more days to an incident in front of the student union during the Time Out/Wacipi activities April 2, when students from a fraternity allegedly yelled out the windows of a frat house taunting the Native students putting up a teepee. . ."
