In a video message on April 7, 2020, President Julian Bear Runner of the Oglala Sioux Tribe confirmed the first COVID-19 case on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

Bear Runner said the person who tested positive lives in Oglala Lakota County in South Dakota. He said the person is being treated off the reservation.

“The family has been placed in self-quarantine,” Bear Runner said. “All precautions are being taken.”

The South Dakota Department of Health currently lists one COVID-19 cases in Oglala Lakota County.
