In an update on April 9, 2020, the Pueblo of Zuni confirmed 24 positive COVID-19 cases within the New Mexico-based tribe.

The number marks an increase from the 15 previously reported by Governor Val Panteah. It comes amid widespread testing on the reservation.

According to the latest update, a total of 192 people have been tested. Besides the 24 positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, 150 have tested negative. Results are pending from 18 individuals.

“The Pueblo of Zuni and Emergency Management is stressing to the community to adhere to the shelter-in-place and social distancing; understand that it takes one person to infect everyone around them,” the update reads.

The tribe has worked in conjunction with the New Mexico Department of Health to bring testing to the reservation. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D), a former member of U.S. Congress, has expressed concerns about coronavirus outbreaks in Pueblo communities.

Results released by the state on April 9 show an increase of 13 new cases in McKinley County. Zuni is located in the county, as is the city of Gallup, a hotspot for the coronavirus in New Mexico.

The county is also home to the main reservation of the Navajo Nation and the Ramah Chapter of the Navajo Nation. The tribe has seen outbreaks in both areas.
