Luján Statement on Passage of Heroes Act to Further Address Public Health and Economic Impacts of COVID-19

Washington, D.C. – U.S. House Assistant Speaker Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) issued the following statement on the passage of the Heroes Act – critical relief legislation to bolster our national response to the COVID-19 pandemic, support workers, and provide much-needed aid to local, state, and Tribal governments:

“Across the nation, Americans are looking to Congress for urgent action to address the COVID-19 pandemic as cases continue to rise and working families struggle to make ends meet. With the highest rate of unemployment since the Great Depression, the Heroes Act will provide urgent support for workers, small businesses and nonprofits, and the tens of millions of Americans who have lost their jobs. The legislation also will support a robust national response to the pandemic by expanding COVID-19 testing, contact tracing, and treatment.

“Local, state, and Tribal governments have been hard hit on the frontline of this crisis. I have called for dramatically expanding aid and am proud to have helped secure nearly $1 trillion in additional assistance included in the Heroes Act. We must ensure these governments receive relief to continue essential services, meet the needs of their communities, and protect the paychecks of first responders and teachers.

“Inaction in the face of this crisis will cost lives and hamper our economic recovery. That’s why House Democrats took action to meet this moment with strength and protect the livelihoods of American families.”
