Stay active, healthy and safe in the summer during a pandemic

Oklahoma City Indian Clinic provides ways for youth to stay healthy and active this summer

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City Indian Clinic (OKCIC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit clinic providing health and wellness services to American Indians in central Oklahoma, is offering summer virtual programs for Native youth.

As the novel coronavirus has created lockdowns and quarantines, many businesses, including OKCIC, are forced to find creative ways to provide services to clientele. One way OKCIC is doing this is by offering virtual youth summer programs.

“These virtual programs are a great way to introduce youth to nutrition and exercise activities while safely at home,” Kelsey Tangney said, MS RD/LD CCNP OKCIC Pediatric Dietitian. “It can be exciting to explore a new way to enjoy your summer with friends in a virtual environment.”

Programs offered include:

  • Teaching Urban Roads to Lifestyle and Exercise (TURTLE) camp: This is a wellness camp that includes physical activity, nutrition and culture.

  • Kids in the Kitchen: This is a group directed towards teaching children about food safety, knife techniques and healthy cooking skills.

“Creating active and healthy activities for kids can motivate them to practice what they’ve learned throughout the year,” said Tangney.

OKCIC provides all of the needed supplies for pick-up at OKCIC when patients sign up for a program, including recipe ingredients for Kids in the Kitchen and activity packets for TURTLE camp.
