POL COVID-19 Update: Possible UK Variant in Pueblo of Laguna

Pueblo of Laguna, General Public Group

Sent 04/07/2021 16:26 MDT

ALERT: The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) has contacted the Pueblo of Laguna EOC on data showing strong scientific evidence of the possibility of the B.1.1.7 coronavirus variant, also known as the UK variant, in the Pueblo of Laguna. Contact tracers have placed individuals and households who have been impacted in quarantine and scheduled for testing. Governor Antonio has been briefed by the POL EOC.

What is the UK variant? It is a mutated virus of SARS-CoV-2 the virus that causes COVID-19. It was first identified in the United Kingdom in 2020. It is now identified as the most common strain of COVID-19 in the United States as reported by CDC. The UK variant characteristics are described as being more serious, very contagious (easily transmittable), and causes more severe illness for those who are not vaccinated.

Both vaccine makers, Pfizer and Moderna, have tested the effectiveness of their vaccines against the UK variant and tests are showing the vaccines are effective against this strain. The POL EOC strongly encourages that we all take individual responsibility to get vaccinated to protect ourselves and our children who are still not able to receive the vaccine. The virus still has a hold of us and is putting our community at risk so we must continue to remain vigilant.

How can I protect myself and my family? The POL EOC strongly encourages the community to continue utilizing the following tools we currently have available:

  1. COVID-19 Vaccine. Both Pfizer and Moderna have shown effectiveness against this variant strain. It is highly encouraged to get vaccinated to help protect yourself and your loved ones.
  2. COVID-19 Testing remains and very important strategy to rapidly identify infectious individuals including those that may be carrying this variant strain.
  3. COVID-19 Safe Practices. Please continue your COVID-19 safe practices of avoiding large gatherings, wear a face mask, stay 6 feet away from others, wash your hands often, and be mindful of who your children come in contact with.

More information will be provided as it becomes available. Stay connected to the EOC via text/call alerts, POL website, POL Facebook page, and email announcements. For questions or concerns contact the EOC Hotline at (505) 328-5682 or email us at covidinfo@pol-nsn.gov. Stay safe!
