12 new cases, 29,294 recoveries, and five more deaths related to COVID-19, mask mandate remains in place for the Navajo Nation

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – On Friday, the Navajo Department of Health, in coordination with the NavajoEpidemiology Center and the Navajo Area Indian Health Service, reported 12 new COVID-19 positive cases for the Navajo Nation and five more deaths. The total number of deaths is now 1,291 as of Friday – this total includes several delayed reported deaths. Reports indicate that 29,294 individuals have recovered from COVID-19. 269,860 COVID-19 tests have been administered. The total number of positive COVID-19 cases is now 30,693, including four delayed reported cases. 

Navajo Nation COVID-19 positive cases by Service Unit:

• Chinle Service Unit: 5,590
• Crownpoint Service Unit: 2,946
• Ft. Defiance Service Unit: 3,656
• Gallup Service Unit: 4,869
• Kayenta Service Unit: 2,722
• Shiprock Service Unit: 5,175
• Tuba City Service Unit: 3,733
• Winslow Service Unit: 1,983

* 19 residences with COVID-19 positive cases are not specific enough to place them accurately in a Service Unit.

On Friday, the state of Arizona reported 854 new cases, Utah reported 336, and New Mexico reported 223 cases. Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and Navajo Department of Health Executive Director Dr. Jill Jim reaffirmed the Navajo Nation’s mask requirement. 

“The Navajo Nation’s mask mandate remains in effect. Everyone is still required to wear a mask in public, indoors and outdoors on the Navajo Nation. We have to continue to push back on COVID-19 and a big part of pushing back is getting vaccinated. On Saturday, several health care facilities on the Navajo Nation will hold drive-thru vaccinations for individuals who are 12 years and older. These events are open to the public and do not require an appointment. This is a great opportunity for families to get vaccinated together or to have adolescent family members get their first dose of the Pfizer vaccine. Please be safe and keep wearing your masks in public,” said President Nez.

The following vaccination sites will offer the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine on Saturday, March 15, 2021 for individuals who are 12 years and older – those who are 12-17 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

• UNM Gallup Campus – Gallup, NM                     9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (MDT)
• Sage Memorial Hospital – Ganado, AZ                7:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. (MDT)
• Tséhootsooí Medical Center – Ft. Defiance, AZ   9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (MDT)
• Shiprock High School – Shiprock, AZ                   8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (MDT)
• Utah Navajo Health System                        8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (MDT)

We appreciate all of the health care workers for providing vaccination opportunities this weekend.
