Oklahoma City Indian Clinic provides innovative ways to continue health care services

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City Indian Clinic (OKCIC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit clinic providing health and wellness services to American Indians in central Oklahoma, offers new and innovative ways to continue to provide excellent health care to American Indians.

As the novel coronavirus has created lockdowns and quarantines, many businesses, including OKCIC, are forced to find creative ways to provide services to clientele.

“Over the past few months, OKCIC has created new ways to provide care to patients,” Robyn Sunday-Allen said, CEO of OKCIC. “Although we have had virtual visit technology for nearly two years, it had not been used to this extent until COVID-19 forced it upon us. We also initiated curbside care, including an immunization clinic, and more.”

Since mid-March of 2020, OKCIC has broadened services offered for virtual visits with Mend Telemedicine. Some of the services now available virtually include medical visits for non-life-threatening symptoms, behavioral health, optometry, life coaching, personal training, dietitian, prenatal and more.

Traditionally, virtual visits enable health care access to patients who are not able to travel to their health care provider for specific non-life-threatening injuries or illnesses. During the pandemic, virtual visits have helped to keep patients’ appointments with providers for a variety of services, all from the safety of their home.

Additionally, OKCIC offers virtual group programs, including Get SET, Kids in the Kitchen, Warrior Down Recovery, Clinic Culture Night, Native Youth Preventing Diabetes (NYPD) camp and Teaching Urbans Roads To Lifestyle and Exercise (TURTLE) Camp.

“We want our patients to continue to be involved with Oklahoma City Indian Clinic in a safe way,” Sunday-Allen said. “Creating innovative ways for them to do this has been the key to providing safe, quality care to our patients during this pandemic.”
