FRIDAY, JULY 26, 2002

The Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas closed its casino at midnight on Thursday, putting more than 200 people out of work.

A federal judge ordered the closure unless the tribe complied with state law regarding gaming devices. An emergency stay of the order was rejected by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday.

The tribe plans to continue to fight the closure but also seek changes in federal law to ensure it can offer gaming.
