Principal Chief David Hill of Muscogee (Creek) Nation shared a photo of his great-grandfather Charley Coker on a July 22, 2020, post on social media. Coker was a key aide to Chitto Harjo, a Creek leader who held the United States accountable to its nation-to-nation treaty promises.

“I hold the spirit of these men in my heart today as we defend our victory in the Supreme Court,” Hill wrote in the post.

The U.S. Supreme Court decision in McGirt v. Oklahoma confirmed the continued existence of the Creek Reservation, which was promised to the tribe by treaty. Hill has vowed to resist any efforts that would undermine the tribe’s victory.
