Tuesday, November 11, 2003

The first Native woman has been elected to the Saskatchewan Legislature.

Joan Beatty, a former journalist, won with 69 percent of the vote. She belongs to the New Democratic Party, which now holds a slight majority in the Legislature after the province's elections last Tuesday.

Beatty, a marathon runner, will represent the Cumberland Constituency. She says she will look to her elders to guidance. Beatty is Cree.

Saskatchewan Premier Lorne Calvert, also NDP, said the province will focus on working with First Nations and Metis people.
