Report notes extremely high rate of suicide among Alaska Natives

Alaska Natives continue to suffer from an extremely high rate of suicide, according to a new report from the Statewide Suicide Prevention Council.

Between 2006 and 2007, 96 Alaska Natives took their lives. Based on their population in the state, their suicide rate is 42.32 per 100,000 people, far higher than the rate of 16.6 for per 100,000 for non-Natives.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the suicide rate among Alaska Native and American Indians between the ages of 15 and 29 was nearly double the national rate during those same two years.
