California tribes lobby lawmakers on off-reservation casinos

Monday, April 15, 2013

Tribes in California are stepping up lobbying efforts on two off-reservation casinos, The Sacramento Bee reports.

The North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians and the Enterprise Rancheria won approval from the federal government and the state governor to open off-reservation casinos. They now need to win over state lawmakers, who must ratify Class III gaming compacts for the proejcts.

"I've heard from folks on both sides of the issue but at this stage there is so much coming at you," Assembly Rep. Ken Cooley (D) told the paper.

Opponents of the casinos include rival tribes and community groups. Both projects are also being litigated in federal court.
