The Pala Band of Mission Indians broke ground, literally, on a $170 million expansion and renovation of its casino in southern California.

Chairman Robert Smith drove the excavator himself as the tribe embarked on the project at the Pala Casino Resort and Spa. The facility will see a new hotel tower with 348 rooms, a four-pool and entertainment complex, a larger parking garage and a complete "refresh" of the interior and exterior furnishings and surroundings.

“Our ability to exponentially expand and refresh Pala Casino Spa & Resort is a true testament to, not only the growth of Pala, but also to the thriving economy and the continued strength of the gaming industry in California,” Chairman Robert Smith said in a press release on October 17. “This is a significant milestone for our tribe and we look forward to continuing to exceed the expectations of our loyal patrons.”

When the hotel is complete, the casino will boast 853 rooms. The parking garage is growing by 420 spaces.

Inside the casino, the tribe is adding more machines and tables, as well as a new bar, to the gaming floor. A casual café, an Asian restaurant, a sushi restaurant and a sports bar are also being added to the existing slate of food options.

The tribe expects the first phase of work to be complete in the spring of 2018. The project will wrap up sometime in late 2019.
