Cherokee council approves casino fund proposal

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 15, 2003

The Cherokee Nation tribal council approved a bill 13-0, with one abstention, to set aside 25 percent of gaming revenue for tribal programs.

The tribe's casinos brought in nearly $25 million last year, a council member said. But the tribe's programs received only $4.3 million, or 17 percent, while the rest went to expanding the facilities, according to the Associated Press.

The bill awaits Cherokee Chief Chad Smith's signature to become law.
