Small Wash. tribe banks on casino project

The Stillaguamish Tribe of Washington is hoping a casino development will help create more economic opportunities for its members.

The 190 members suffer from a high rate of unemployment and poverty, according to The Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Some have changed their membership to the Tulalip Tribes, which owns a successful casino, the paper reports.

The tribe is building the casino on land that was the site of a tribal housing project. Most of the residents agreed to move and were given a choice of buying a new home or accepting money.
