SEPTEMBER 12, 2000

Republican Presidential candidate and Governor of Texas, George W. Bush, will attend an town forum on education in Albuquerque, New Mexico, this Friday.

Bush last came to New Mexico to meet with tribal leaders and to unveil his initiative for funding tribal schools. He said, if elected, he would propose spending $1 billion as part of his Tribal School Capital Improvement Fund.

At the meeting, various Navajo, Apache, and Pueblo leaders questioned him on his committment to tribal sovereignty. Although it was reported that Bush was received well among the leaders, most have instead endorsed Vice-President Al Gore, a Democrat.

The All Indian Pueblo Council, representing New Mexico's 19 Pueblos, endorsed Gore after he visited with them last month.
