White House faces Senate subpoena
WEDNESDAY, MAY 22, 2002
A Senate panel today will vote on a subpoena to compel the White House to turn over information related to its contacts with the bankrupt company Enron.
Hoping to prevent a vote, White House counsel Alberto Gonzales asked Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.), chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, not to proceed. In a letter yesterday he asked for more time to collection responses from questionnaires.
In response, a spokesperson for Lieberman said the vote would occur as planned.
