Beating his predecessor by a month, President George W. Bush saw all of his Cabinet nominees confirmed this week with Gale Norton and John Ashcroft finally surviving their Senate tests. Both weren't confirmed without a fight, though, and a number of Democrat Senators rallied against the two controversial nominees. Norton was able to convert a number of doubters, however, and was confirmed by a vote of 75-24. She also gained the support of a number of tribes, despite some leaders professing never having first-hand experience with her. Ashcroft on the other hand had the support of only eight Democrats, emerging with a 58-42 vote. Get the Story:

It was President George W. Bush's second week in office and he spent much of it reaching out to religious groups, African-Americans and the disabled. Its all part of compassionate conservatism, or so the catch-phrase goes. Will tribes be part of this program? Do they even to want to be compassionately conserved? If all goes as planned, the public might know soon. A number of tribal leaders hope to meet with Bush soon although its likely it won't be at all like the tribal leader bash President Clinton had back in 1994. Get the Story:
