Daschle can't stop Yucca vote

Democrats in the Senate can't hold up a vote on the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste site, Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) admitted on Wednesday.

Daschle originally said the proposal to store up to 77,000 tons of highly radioactive nuclear waste in a mountain outside of Las Vegas was dead. But it turns out he didn't know that federal law requires a vote within a certain window of time, he acknowledges.

The project is heavily opposed in Nevada. In postponing a controversial hearing on a Western Shoshone land claim award, Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said he would work with Shoshone tribes on the opposition.
