Pataki explains rejection of Seneca-Cayuga deal

New York Gov. George Pataki (R) said lack of local support forced him to drop negotiations with the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma.

Pataki's office was working with the tribe to settle its portion of the 64,000-acre Cayuga land claim. The tribe wants a casino in Rochester.

The state has been ordered to pay the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe and the Cayuga Nation, based in New York, nearly $247 million for stealing the land. The case is on appeal.
