Hearing set over gaming proposals in California

A California judge will hold a hearing August 5 over rival gaming proposals that pit tribes against Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R).

Tribes are backing Proposition 70. Sponsored by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, it would allow tribes to expand their casinos in exchange for sharing 8.84 percent of net revenues with the state.

Schwarzenegger opposes the initiative. He is promoting compacts he signed with five tribes that would also allow expansion of casinos in exchange for more revenues.

The disagreement is over the wording of language being used to describe the proposals. The Agua Caliente Band and the Schwarzenegger administration have filed briefs disputing written statements about Proposition 70.
