65 tribes in Calif. unite to defeat gaming iniative

A coalition of 65 tribes has formed Californians Against the Deceptive Gambling Proposition to defeat a proposed gaming initiative.

The group won't say how much it has raised. But the Morongo Band of Mission Indians has given $1.5 million and the United Auburn Indian Community has given $1.5 million.

The initiative the tribes are targeting is the Gaming Revenue Act of 2004. It would force tribes to accept a 25 percent tax on their slot machines. If the tribes refuse, or if the Department of Interior rejects the rate, non-Indian card clubs and racetracks would be allowed to run slots.
