Narragansett Tribe opens casino campaign center

The Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island opened the campaign headquarters for its casino bid on Monday.

The tribe has partnered with Harrah’s Entertainment for a casino in West Warwick. Local leaders support the facility, expected to create thousands of jobs.

The tribe has sought voter approval for a casino for several years. But state lawmakers have not put the issue on a ballot since the mid-1990s, when the tribe's proposal failed.

A Congressional rider prevents the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act from applying to the tribe.
