Stillaguamish Tribe finally starts work on casino

The Stillaguamish Tribe of Washington has begun construction of a $19 million casino.

The tribe saw opposition from local residents and some tribal members who said the leadership was unaccountable. The tribe also lost its first investors when the state insisted on background checks. Those investors had been indicted for their handling of a union fund.

The tribe then obtained a $19 million loan from Marshall Bank of Minneapolis to build on 20 acres of trust land. The 22,000-square-foot casino is expected to open in October.
