Tribes have poured millions into Proposition 70, a ballot initiative that would allow California tribes to expand gaming.
Supporters say it will generate much-needed revenues for tribes and the state. Tribes would share 8.84 percent of net revenues with the state if they offer more than 2,000 slot machines under 99-year compacts.
Opponents say there is a social cost to gaming. They fear the state is turning into another Las Vegas, with local communities feeling the burden.
Spending on Prop. 70, sponsored by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, has topped $105 million, the most in state history. Most tribes have endorsed the initiative. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R), who signed revenue-sharing compacts allowing more than 2,000 slot machines, opposes it.
