Newspaper series: Gambling in New Mexico

The Albuquerque Journal ran an eight-day series about the growth and impact of gaming in New Mexico.

"The Big Bet" looked at all angles of the gaming industry: tribal, non-tribal and state. The articles suggested that state regulation of tribal casinos was lax.

Of the 22 tribes with land in the state, 13 operate casinos. Several others, including the Navajo Nation, Jemez Pueblo and Nambe Pueblo, are planning to enter the market soon. The tribes with casinos generate and estimated $600 million in revenues a year.

Tribal leaders are happy with their successes but say the boom will end due to expansion of tribal and non-tribal gaming. At least three tribes are interested in developing off-reservation casinos in the southern part of the state.
