Pojoaque Pueblo settles revenue sharing suit

Pojoaque Pueblo has agreed to pay the state of New Mexico $24 million to settle a lawsuit over revenue sharing.

The tribe had refused to share 16 percent of revenues under a 1997 compact. The tribe said the rate was an illegal tax under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

The tribe was in court to protest the compact while other tribes signed a new agreement that capped the sharing rate to 8 percent. After holding out for four years, the tribe agreed to sign the new compact and pay back the amount owed under the old one in installments.
